    Since antiquity, poetry and music in the Near East have been interrelated and were believed to have extraordinary powers. Both the context in which oral poetry is set, and the musically induced state of enchantment or ecstasy it produces, are defined in Arabic by the word 'ṭarab'. This article aims to provide an exhaustive definition of this concept, as well as a brief introduction to the artistic domain that encompasses extemporary performance of songs/poems, from the pre-Islamic period up until our modern era. Drawing on literary excerpts, the article attempts to highlight how music, literary performance and aesthetic emotion are amalgamated through the holistic experience of 'ṭarab', which has maintained its basic features virtually unchanged from the days of Ǧāhiliyya until the golden age of Umm Kulthum.

    This article analyzes the relationship between emotions and jazz music in Lithuanian literature originating during the Soviet-era, and considers emotions as text phenomena. In the following investigation, a drama by Juozas Grušas, two prose works by Romualdas Lankauskas and Ričardas Gavelis, and four poems by Judita Vaičiūnaitė, Janina Degutytė, Antanas Jonynas and Tomas Arūnas Rudokas are analyzed in chronological order. The analysis focuses on two types of verbal configuration of emotion: thematization (explicit emotions; content level) and presentation (implicit configuration of emotions, content, and form level). The following questions come to the fore: What emotions are named in the texts? How are they depicted? What emotions are thematized in conjunction with the music? What effect does the jazz music have, and what emotions arise at its reception in the text? How are those emotions and jazz music related to the historical context, namely the Soviet period?

    Die Koexistenz von Mensch und Tier und ihre wechselseitigen Beziehungen kristallisieren sich mit besonderer Prägnanz heraus, wenn es um die Darstellung der sogenannten 'companion animals' ('Gefährtentiere') des Menschen, der Haustierspezies wie zum Beispiel Katzen und Hunde, geht. Den Versuch, die Besonderheit dieser Beziehungen und ihre vielfältigen Bedeutungsebenen auszuloten, haben zahlreiche Autoren in unterschiedlichen Epochen unternommen. Eine Gesamtdarstellung literarischer 'companion animals' im globalen Kontext würde den Rahmen eines einzelnen Aufsatzes unweigerlich sprengen. Es ist vielmehr Ziel des folgenden Beitrags, die besondere Relation zwischen Mensch und Katze innerhalb der neueren japanischen Kultur zu beleuchten, wie sie sich in einigen beliebten Erzählungen des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts beispielhaft manifestiert, die auch im internationalen Raum großen Anklang gefunden haben.

    To what extent does cultural distance interfere with or limit literary experience? What kind of intimacy is needed to make a text into a work? This essay seeks to answer these questions by focusing on the writings of Arvind Krishna Mehrotra. In doing so, it suggests that the challenges of cultural distance may be most acute when dealing with texts from homo-linguistic literary environments, and that we might overcome these challenges by undertaking a world literary criticism that attends to localized fields and materials without forgetting the charge of particular works.

    2018 ist Georgien Ehrengast der Frankfurter Buchmesse. Zum ersten Mal nach der Wende wird die georgische Literatur damit prominent in einer fremden Sprache präsentiert. Gerade die Literaturen kleiner Nationen sind auf internationale Anerkennung dieser Art besonders angewiesen. Doch gibt es einen qualitativen Unterschied zwischen Literaturen 'kleiner' und 'großer Nationen'? Diese Frage ist im Spannungsfeld zweier Konzepte zu diskutieren, die mit dem der Nationalliteratur als lange dominierendem Ordnungsprinzip literarischer Texte konkurrieren: kleine Literatur und Weltliteratur.
