Since the 19th century, the intérieur has been the bourgeois space of self-reflection, an archive of objects that bear traces, a material utopia where the presence of objects produces a loss of time and space. Working for an international interior magazine, I came across several strategies that photographers use to bring an interior to life, to stage a feeling of a private sphere. These strategies are identical with the ones that have been applied in 19th century literature: It’s the same concern with objects, the discovery of the narrative power of details and traces, a search for „truth“ on the surface of things. My article leads through some fictional intérieurs, a photo shooting on the Maldives and a small hotel in L. A., where a designer brought all the ideas together to create a space that narrate of its own accord.

Although Alexander von Humboldt is well known for his major impact on the development of new scientific knowledge and the rise of disciplines such as Geography and Ecology, his critical reflections on languages from a scientific point of view, as well as from an aesthetic perspective, still receive little attention. New research has shown that von Humboldt's writings on the languages of indigenous people may well be considered the beginning of anthropological-comparative linguistics. This article outlines the significance of von Humboldt's aesthetics of language in his own scientific texts. He explores the different dimensions of sound landscapes, combinating scientific description in prose and the sound of the indigenous terms. By this strategy, he connects different forms of "text islands" ('Textinseln') in order to create an intratextual web of knowledge archipelagos based on his concept of a science which refers to the senses ('sinnliche Wissenschaft'). The polyphonic structure of his writing opens up a collage of natural musical arrangements of animal and human sounds, fused into a common language of life forms bound together by the "phonotextual" soundscape of his writing skills. By merging epistemic and aesthetic forms, he creates a symphony of life between art, science, and nature.

This article analyzes the relationship between emotions and jazz music in Lithuanian literature originating during the Soviet-era, and considers emotions as text phenomena. In the following investigation, a drama by Juozas Grušas, two prose works by Romualdas Lankauskas and Ričardas Gavelis, and four poems by Judita Vaičiūnaitė, Janina Degutytė, Antanas Jonynas and Tomas Arūnas Rudokas are analyzed in chronological order. The analysis focuses on two types of verbal configuration of emotion: thematization (explicit emotions; content level) and presentation (implicit configuration of emotions, content, and form level). The following questions come to the fore: What emotions are named in the texts? How are they depicted? What emotions are thematized in conjunction with the music? What effect does the jazz music have, and what emotions arise at its reception in the text? How are those emotions and jazz music related to the historical context, namely the Soviet period?

This article aims to reveal the hitherto unknown circumstances of the creation of the opera "King Roger" ["Król Roger", premiere 1926] by the Polish composer Karol Szymanowski (1882-1932). As will be shown, this opera, with its oriental color, owes its genesis to the concluding of what we call "an emotional pact", referring to the 1918 meetings in Elizavetgrad, and then in Odessa on the Black Sea, between the composer and his cousin, the prose writer and poet Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz (1894-1980). Their Odessa stay, in particular, fostered the crystallization of their conception of beauty, and allowed namely the Dionysian element to emerge. At the same time, Odessa was where the creators were able to share the secret of their homosexuality, a place which functioned as a substitute for the Orient and an escape from the nightmare of World War I - all elements that found a wonderful expression in the libretto and the music of "King Roger".
