Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Co-Director (York University) of the Canadian Centre for German and European Studies (CCGES), for a term of three to five years. The Canadian Centre for German and European Studies (CCGES)/Le Centre canadien d’études allemandes et européennes (CCEAE), a co-operative initiative of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), l’Université de Montréal, and York University, was established after a nationwide competition upon the recommendation of an expert panel of academics from Germany and Canada. The Centre, with offices in Montréal and Toronto, was formally opened in November 1997 and had its mandate renewed by the DAAD in 2003. The CCGES/CCEAE is a national research and teaching resource, focusing on contemporary Germany in its European context. Candidates must have a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field and the potential to devise innovative projects that attract third-party funding. Administrative experience, including the administration of grants and projects, will be advantageous. The successful candidate must be able to conduct courses in both English and German; a working knowledge of French is an advantage. The responsibilities of the Co-Director include: the day-to-day administration of budget, financial, organizational, and academic activities of the Centre at York; the development of additional funding sources; maintaining an active individual and collaborative research program; initiating a mix of curiosity-driven and commissioned research and related scholarly activities; remaining cognizant of traditional areas of scholarship while also being attentive to the leading edge of innovative knowledge creation and dissemination. The Co-Director will be appointed to the position of Associate or Full Professor in the Faculty of Arts at York in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics or the Department of Political Science, depending on area of expertise.
The position will commence July 1, 2007 and is subject to budgetary approval. The deadline for receipt of completed applications is November 15, 2006.
