BeschreibungMetalepsis in Popular Culture

Neuchâtel, 25.06.2009-27.06.2009

A look around the landscape of contemporary popular culture proves the widespread significance of "metalepsis": Superheroes meet their makers, cartoon characters negotiate the setting of their story with their authors and TV protagonists appropriate the remote control themselves. Not only in avantgarde literature, but throughout the spectrum of entertainment media characters and authors renegotiate their relationship and metalepsis is here to stay.
Metalepsis in Popular Culture addresses the two most pertinent gaps in the study of metalepsis as it has developed over the last thirty years since Gérard Genette coined the term “métalepse” in his seminal essay Discours du récit: the lack of a coherent theoretical framework, which works across media, and the neglect of the systematic analysis of metalepses in popular culture.
