Panel Topic: Schelling and the Future of Theory
December 27-30, 2009
Philadelphia, PA

Submission Deadline: March 30, 2009

For years it was received wisdom that the works of F. W. J. Schelling were merely a precursor to the philosophy of Hegel. However, in recent years some commentators have started to challenge this view. Slavoj Zizek’s work The Indivisible Remainder (1996) is best exemplifies the renewal of interest in Schelling’s works, although one could also point to the anthology The New Schelling (2004). Even before the publication of these studies Schelling’s influence has been acknowledged from some quarters: Martin Heidegger went so far as to call his writings “more profound” than Hegel’s, while Jean-Luc Nancy dedicated a substantial portion of his study L’experience de la liberté (1988) to Schelling’s late philosophy. Taking these discussions a point of departure, this panel addresses the relevance of Schelling’s thought for contemporary theory—and how contemporary theory appears from the perspective of Schelling’s thought. Towards this end this panel will place special emphasis on the prominent role that Schelling accords the philosophy of art and its consequences for theory. Possible topics include (but are not limited to) Schelling and tragedy; the philosophy of mythology and its relationship to the “religious turn” in theory; the materialism of late Schelling.
