|Titel||MLA 2009 panel: German Transliteratures|
The Division on Nineteenth-and Early Twentieth-Century German Literature solicits abstracts for papers for the 2009 MLA Convention on “German Transliteratures.” The emphasis in German Studies of the mid to late 19th century has mostly been on the co-emergence of national and regional literary traditions, with less attention paid to transnational dimensions. But what of the exchanges with literatures to the north, east, south, and west, as well as from more remote lands— and times? What was particularly “German” about the cross-cultural (and cross-historical) literary projects of the 19th and early 20th centuries? For example, what major translation projects were undertaken, and what was their impact? How did other literatures, both foreign and ancient, figure in German-language literature? How did travel literature help reshape the literary landscape? Historical linguistics? Etc.
