Queering the Gaze: Film and Feminism in the Classroom

How do we approach classroom discussions of the “male gaze” and the
“feminine aesthetic” from the perspective of a sometimes very queer
21st century? We welcome submissions that feature innovative and
potentially subversive uses of film, television, and internet-based
video in the teaching of language, literature, and culture at all
levels. This session seeks to explore both the uses feminist filmic
material in language teaching and the enactment of feminist and queer
pedagogies in teaching film and video. We invite presenters to
demonstrate their approaches in a workshop-style format.

Presentations may address the following questions:
• What role can we as instructors play in negotiating students’
gazes?
• How can we envision the classroom as a political space, a stage
for the construction of and play with identities as well as the critical
discussion thereof?
• What place does film have in the literature classroom?
• How does the use of film and film-making tie in with your
feminist teaching methodologies?

Topics may include, but are not limited to:
• Feminist and queer film and film theory
• Queer pedagogies and the queer-inclusive classroom
• Postfeminism in the postmodern age
• Masculinities and crises of masculinity
• Cinematic representations of power plays, S&M, and other
non-vanilla sexual practices

A note on format:
This session is the featured e-panel for the 2009 Women in German
conference. Completed essays will be posted online for participants to
read by Oct. 1, 2009. The online submission process offers a unique
opportunity to present in front of an audience that is already familiar
with your pedagogical concept. We look forward to featuring
presentations that engage the audience through a workshop-style format
or an interactive or multimedia presentation.

Please send a 250-300 word abstract, including a description of your
presentation format, and a one-page abbreviated CV or bio by March 1,
2009, to both organizers: Corinna Kahnke (ckahnke@calpoly.edu) and Faye
Stewart (fayestewart@gsu.edu).
