Objects of Desire in 18th-Century Collecting

Inspired by a new look at the study of the souvenir and collection in Susan Stewart's On Longing (1984), the organizers seek paper proposals about the culture of collecting in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century German-speaking Europe. We welcome abstracts about objects and texts that describe or thematize them, including dolls, porcelain miniatures, games, mechanical toys, souvenirs, coins and books.

We are interested in a variety of theoretical approaches to material culture and subjectivity, especially with regard to the ways in which the production, circulation and consumption of these objects of desire contribute to the construction of gendered identities.
