TitelGSA 2009 (Arlington, Virginia): Religion, Politics, and Law in 19th-20th-Century Germany
BeschreibungWould anyone be interested in forming a panel at the upcoming German Studies Association meeting that would be an opportunity to reflect and share knowledge about the interrelationships betwen religion, politics, and law in Germany? My own interest is in looking at the history of Sec. 166 of the Criminal Code - i.e., the offense of "blasphemy"/"Gotteslaesterung"/"Religionsbeschimpfung" - how it has been used by religious minorities, and what its continued presence in the Criminal Code says about the place of religion in German law and in German public life. I would welcome ideas from, e.g., historians, political/legal/cultural theorists, or scholars of religion who are working on other questions concerning the place of religion in German politics, law, or public life. Historical treatments should ideally also reflect on the ongoing implications of their findings for German culture and politics - or for questions concerning religion and politics in a comparative/transnational perspective.

Please send preliminary information about your idea to me by February 1, which will allow us plenty of time to finalize a session proposal by the GSA deadline of February 15.
