CFP: Cultures of Performance Around 1800 (GSA 2009, Washington, DC)

Washington DC, 08.10.2009-11.10.2009

We are seeking contributions that deal with questions of performance in late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century German literature, philosophy, salon culture, theater, the visual arts and the sciences. Examples of this might include declamatory concerts and staged readings of literary works, scholarly and popular lectures, the tableau vivant, cultural and political festivals, memorials, public scientific experiments and the literary performance of self. Possible questions that the panel will address include:

• How do performances stage cultural exchange and/or sociability? How do cultures of performance set in motion and/or alter certain gendered subject positions, both in terms of performer and audience?

• How do performers reflect in and through their dramatic, scholarly, musical, or visual self-staging on the status of their performance as a cultural, historical, political event? How are performances sites for (un)critical reflection on what constitutes culture, history, social and political life?

• How does our access to performance (mainly through textual representation and visual depictions) condition how we "read" discrete cultural events? If we want to understand historical performances as textual events, how does this textuality limit or enable our interpretations? In turn, how does an approach to literature as something performed expand our notion of literature? What theoretical and methodological issues are at stake here?

• How do new performance genres emergent around 1800 help generate new theories of cultural practice more broadly?
