TitelOther Brechts (American Comparative Literature Association - Annual Meeting 2006, Princeton University, USA)
Beschreibung"This session aims to explore the ways in which Bertolt Brecht's
development of a form of critical realism in theater has been developed
and transformed by other art forms and in non-European contexts.
'Brechtian' approaches have been taken up by filmmakers, most notably in
the examples of Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle
Huillet. In the 1950s and 1960s Roland Barthes developed a form of
critical formalism through a close engagement with the work of Brecht.
In Britain and the United States critical formalism was coupled with
psychoanalysis and feminism by filmmakers, visual artists and
performers. South America and Africa have seen the development of
popular political theater movements drawing upon Brecht's writing and
example. What other Brechts are there? This panel seeks papers that
include Brechtian realism reconsidered in other contexts and using new
theoretical approaches; non-European Brechts; queer Brecht; Brecht and
the neo-avantgarde; Brecht and feminism; Brechtian theater after the
fall of the Berlin wall.
