Now Accepting Applications for the 2009-2010 Academic Year

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at The Ohio State University has a long tradition of excellence in graduate education, focusing on the preparation of both teachers and scholars of German.
We provide students at the MA level with a broad background in German literature and culture as well as with extensive training in teaching German as a foreign language. On the PhD level we have seventeen core
German Studies faculty, all recognized experts with whom students can work. Faculty represent the major branches of research in the field of German from medieval literature to the present, with specializations in film and media studies, gender and post-colonial studies, Yiddish and Ashkenazic studies, intellectual history,
literary theory, and interdisciplinary specializations in second-language acquisition, in medieval studies, and in folklore studies. Almost all of our graduate students spend significant time abroad through our cooperative fellowship programs in Berlin (Humboldt and FU), Bonn, and Dresden. We offer a very strong financial package
with benefits and fellowship opportunities.

We invite applicants who demonstrate academic excellence and welcome applicants from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds. Interested students can contact our graduate studies adviser, Professor Barbara
Becker-Cantarino, at (614) 292-8639 or at (, or our graduate secretary, Natascha
Miller, at (614) 292-6985 or at ( Applications are due by January 15, 2009 for fellowship consideration. Full contact information appears on (
