INSTITUTE OF GERMANIC & ROMANCE STUDIES

Austrian Studies Bursary for Doctoral Study at the Institute

Applications are invited from suitably-qualified graduates who wish to focus their research on any aspect of Austrian studies (literature, culture or history). An advanced knowledge of German is essential. The successful candidate, who will register at the Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies for the PhD/MPhil degree of the University of London, will be able to draw on the expertise of the Institute's Ingeborg Bachmann Centre for Austrian Literature and Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies. Preference may be given to anyone proposing to work on the Archives of the Anglo-Austrian Society and the Anglo-Austrian Music Society which are housed at the Institute's Germanic Studies Library.

The award, which is available for three years' full-time study or up to six years' part-time study from October 2009, is funded by the Anglo-Austrian Society from the Otto Harpner Fund and the Angela Krosik Bequest, and is set at £6,000 for 2009-2010, subject to annual review thereafter by the Anglo-Austrian Society. The awardee will be invited to present a short paper on their work at the annual meeting of the Anglo-Austrian Society from their second year of study.

Applicants should send a cv, an outline of their research proposal, and arrange for two academic references to be sent direct to Jane Lewin at the IGRS (email: jane.lewin@sas.ac.uk). The closing date for receipt of applications and references is 5 p.m. on Monday, 8 December 2008. Shortlisted candidates can expect to be interviewed in January.
