Cultural Change and Exchange

Boundaries, Affinities and Interrelations in German Culture

This recently-launched masters degree offers those with a good degree (or equivalent) in German a course offering maximum flexibility, and draws on teaching and research expertise across all the University of London Departments of German. The intellectual focus on boundaries, affinities and interrelations in German literature and culture enables students to study aspects of German literature in depth, and also allows them to make comparisons with other media and literatures. The programme allows students to deepen their previous knowledge of German literature, to explore the ways in which cultural texts express cultural identity, and to study the ways in which literature has interacted with other arts and cultures.

Topics include:

Genres and Media
* Georg Heym and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
* Literature, journalism and film in the Weimar Republic
* Interrelations between writing and painting in Hermann Hesse's work
* Theory and practice of literary adaptation
* The relationship between word and image in Wim Wenders, Der Himmel über Berlin

Cultural Boundaries
* German and English Romanticisms - continuities and discontinuities
* Testing boundaries of genre, periodization and gender entity: Bettina von Arnim, Die Günderode
* Undinen und Froschkönige: crossing boundaries between the human and the non-human
* Queer writing
* Cultural shifts: female East German identities in post-1990 literature

The programme also incorporates a module on European Culture and Literary Theory, the opportunitiy to follow up indvidually supervised Guided Research Topics, and a Dissertation. Students with German plus another Modern language (French, Italian or Spanish) are also welcome to apply.
