Female Authorship in 18th- and Early 19th-Century German Culture

Philadelphia, January 5-8, 2017

This panel investigates conceptualizations and literary
representations of female authorship in 18th- and early 19th-century
German culture.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

What concepts of female authorship are presented in the
correspondence, theoretical statements, and literary works of male and
female authors?

What is the relation between female authorship, concepts of the body,
and gender roles?

Did female authors consider themselves isolated practitioners or did
they seek familial or professional mentorship?

How did female authors situate themselves with respect to contemporary
literary, aesthetic, philosophical, and intellectual discourses?

Is there a female “anxiety of influence”?

Which tropes and metaphors shaped the discourse on female authorship?
