While multiple aesthetic theories explore notions and practices of seeing and hearing, fewer inquiries explore limitations in perception due to deafness and blindness. This panel will explore philosophical, medical, and literary works depicting the lack of hearing or seeing. We aim to discover if and how these portrayals in various eras of German cultural history set the groundwork for developments in the area of sensory perception.
Around 1800, for example, Karl Philipp Moritz and Jean Paul contributed in both serious and satirical ways to a budding discussion of deafness in an era that saw the founding of the Leipzig School for the Deaf and the spread of sign language. Around the same time, blindness, perception, and cognition were thematized in works by Heinrich von Kleist and E.T.A. Hoffmann, and were essential to philosophical debates surrounding Ossian and “Molyneux’s Question.” Additional texts both before and after these have explored relations among deafness, blindness, cognition, aesthetic experience, and interpersonal communication in general.
We welcome papers that treat deafness and blindness in any era of German literary, philosophical, or medical history. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
--figurative and literal blindness and deafness in relation to narrative reliability
-- the relation of deafness, blindness, and the development of literacy in German-speaking countries
--implications of blindness and deafness for conceptions of empathy
--the relation between deafness, blindness, and transitions in popular media, e.g. rise of theater, increasing literacy around 1800
-- blind Tiresias or Oedipus figures and metaphorical blindness
--Enlightenment ideals of the link between sensory perception and cognition
--attempts to ban or limit sign language, e.g. the 1880 Milan Conference
--association of exceptional talents with blindness and/or deafness
--moral or religious perspectives on blindness and/or deafness
--perspectives from disability studies, gender studies, media studies
