TitelGSA 2016 Panel: Dada at 100
BeschreibungCFP: GSA 2016 Panel: Dada at 100, San Diego (31.01.2016)

The 100th anniversary of the Dada movement offers an ideal opportunity to
reevaluate the movement, its reception, and its legacy. Over the course of
the past century, Dada has inspired responses from authors ranging from
Walter Benjamin (Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings’ erstwhile neighbor in Bern)
to Peter Bürger to Peter Sloterdijk, as well as from subsequent generations
of artists and writers including the Wiener Gruppe, Rolf Dieter Brinkmann,
and Thomas Kling. While scholars of the movement have at times fallen into
the traps that the Dadaists set for them, endlessly revisiting a few
canonical works or mistaking manifestos for authoritative interpretations,
recent publications have opened up promising new avenues for Dada
scholarship: Matthew Biro’s *The Dada Cyborg* and Arndt Niebisch’s* Media
Parasites in the Early Avant-Garde* bring Dada into conversation with
contemporary theory, while Ruth Hemus’s *Dada’s Women* and Paula K.
Kamenish’s *Mamas of Dada: Women of the European Avant-Garde* take
important steps towards correcting a long-standing gender imbalance.

For this panel, we invite submissions that engage with the history of
Dada’s reception and/or approach the movement from new perspectives. We
particularly encourage contributions that reflect on the state of Dada
scholarship and consider Dada through the lens of its critical reception
and cultural impact. At the same time, papers focusing on individual
authors, artists, or works are welcome, particularly if they address works
or producers that have been neglected or marginalized in existing Dada
scholarship. We are also interested in papers that address the growing
importance of periodical studies, remediation, and digital archives, as
well as in interdisciplinary engagements with visual arts, music and sound
studies, and performance.

This panel is organized by Kurt Beals (Washington University in St. Louis)
and Sherwin Simmons (University of Oregon). Please submit a 250-word
abstract and a short bio by January 31, 2016 to Kurt Beals at
