Theodor Fontane: Aesthetic, Rhetoric, Politics

The personal, it is said, is political, and this adage could be applied as an epigraph to much of Theodor Fontane’s work. In various ways, his novels show how apparently minor aspects of personal experience such as small talk or consumer choices are connected to broader social, political, and historical structures. As textual representations, such details also reflect aesthetic choices. This panel aims to explore the entanglement of aesthetics, language, and politics in Fontane’s writings. From overt political discussions in Der Stechlin to the politics of self-presentation in Frau Jenny Treibel, from the breakdown of communication and the imitation of art in Irrungen, Wirrungen to the role of painting in L’Adultera, Fontane’s works underscore both the political dimensions inherent in speech and representation, as well as the aesthetic and rhetorical dimensions of politics. Proposals are invited for papers on any aspect of this nexus in Fontane’s writings. We especially welcome new and theoretically informed approaches. Please submit abstracts of no more than 400 words to John Lyon (jblyon@pitt.edu) and Brian Tucker (tuckerb@wabash.edu) by January 25, 2016.
