BeschreibungMedial Bodies between Fiction and Faction: Reimagining Carnality

The „body turn“ that started in the 1980s is at present strongly challenged by achievements in medical technology and the growing importance of information technologies. Advocates of such paradigms as transhumanism and posthumanism encourage an epistemology pleading for a radical change of human nature. This development cannot be separated anthropologically from transformations of different levels of imaginaries. From fictional characters, such as Mary Shelley’s monster in her famous novel Frankenstein, or Villiers de L’Isle-Adam’s Eve future, to more concrete projects in which the body’s materiality is used to produce new experiential forms, as is the case in performance arts, visual studies or media studies, the fiction-fact polarity upon which such transformations are partly realized has not ceased to nourish new representational forms of corporeality.
This conference departs from an interdisciplinary perspective to question discursive, narrative and representational resources through which carnality presents itself. As a background, they support shifts in meaning. More precisely, the focus is on the concept of the „medial body“, understood as a transitional environment between fiction and faction, where faction shall refer to a form of imaginary that joins both fictional and factual elements.
