Metalogues: Exploration of a Genre

Björn Kühnicke, Harvard University (
Gernot Waldner, Harvard University (

Gregory Bateson’s 1972 book, Steps to an Ecology of Mind, opens with a series of
conversations between father and daughter which he coins “metalogues”. These conversations attempt to find answers to deceivingly simple questions: "Why Do Things Get in a Muddle?"; "Why a Swan?"; "Why do Frenchman wave their arms about?" Within the book, these metalogues simultaneously introduce cybernetic problems discussed at large in the book and use the procedures of an open system, i.e. a system able to redefine its operations while performing them. In the opening part of this chapter, Bateson defines the metalogue by referring to a formal feature: it performs the topic it discusses. How can one, for example, keep the many definitions
of order in order? The form of the metalogue thus changes its initial problem, rephrases its leading question, jumps from one meta-level to another without ever reaching a conclusion.

The seminar aims to start a conversation on the implications of using the metalogue as a literary genre. This could be achieved through (1) comparisons of the metalogue to other genres; (2) discussions of Bateson’s metalogues and their formal and philosophical problems; (3) situating the metalogue within the context of 1960’s cybernetics; (4) exemplary interpretations of literary texts as metalogues; (5) formal
intersections between literature and science (The seminar might follow the form of a metalogue.)

Feel free to contact the seminar organizers in advance. Abstracts must be received by Midnight PST on Wednesday, September 23, 2015, through the ACLA website.
