BeschreibungFidelity vs. Ingenuity: Adaptations of German-language Literature

Hartford, CT, 17.03.-20.03.2016

As with other literary traditions, German-language literature has been adapted into other media types for centuries, whether the classic forms of visual art and opera or more contemporary media such as film, graphic novels, and multi-media performance art. Oftentimes, updated versions or adaptations into other media have revived classic works and renewed public interest in them. When considering adaptations of cultural masterpieces, however, scholars and critics often react in ways that correspond to the two conventional sides of the adaptation debate. On the one hand, some would argue that adaptations drain the original work of significant literary content that cannot be rendered in other media. On the other hand, many would advocate for viewing the adaptation as an independent work of art. This panel considers adaptations of German-language literature and seeks to answer questions concerning literary adaptation. Critical questions may include but are not limited to: fidelity to the source text; source text as inspiration; renewing literature through adaptation; teaching and learning literary analysis through adaptations; redefining literature through adaptations; the aesthetics of adaptation across media.
