BeschreibungCFP for ASECS, Pittsburgh, PA, March 31 – April 3, 2016: Women Writers
and Female Leadership (panel of the Goethe Society of North America)

It is often assumed that German women writers of the eighteenth and
early nineteenth centuries were doubly disadvantaged when it came to
theories and practices of leadership: typically, female writers around
1800 were excluded from political discourses and confined to ancillary
roles in religion, culture, and politics. Even so, many of these
writers were acutely aware of questions of power, authority, and
governance and frequently discussed these issues in their works, both
explicitly and obliquely. This panel seeks to explore the neglected
topic of female leadership around 1800 and invites contributions on
how eighteenth-century female authors portray women in positions of
authority in the spiritual, cultural, and political realms.
