Remembering the Past: German History in Post-Wende Film and Literature

40th Anniversary Convention, Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA)
Feb. 26-March 1, 2009
Hyatt Regency - Boston, Massachusetts

The interpretations of the Third Reich and the Holocaust were intrinsically different in the GDR and FRG, and so were the ways in which the two states commemorated the immediate past. The fall of the Berlin Wall presents a break that brought together people who had lived through very different experiences: under Soviet control and with the Stasi in the East, or under American influence in the West. Reunification and its aftermath affected East and West Germans in profoundly different ways. As contemporary German film and literature attest, artists in their works are grappling with these disparate histories of the 20th Century in a variety of ways. In the proposed panel, we will explore how these histories are represented in the cultural memory of unified Germany, and to what effect. If we go by theorists such as Pierre Nora, then we might expect such memory narratives to establish continuities and stable, coherent identities. Papers may probe this and/or the following issues:

Discrepancies and contradictions in cultural memory (film, literature, art) and public commemoration
The globalization of the Holocaust
Foregrounding the perpetrator(s)
The German victim discourse
Comparing/Negotiating Nazi and Stasi past
Nazi and Stasi past as a family (hi)story
The influence of the U.S. on German memory culture
