Post Specification
CUHK is an international, research-intensive university whose faculty engages in effective teaching, innovative research, and impactful service. The Department is a young and vibrant Department established in 2004. The primary medium of instruction is English at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. As part of the Department’s strategic plan, it invites applications for three faculty posts at Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor ranks, with prospect for substantiation. The Department has identified the following three areas of scholarship to be targeted in its 10th anniversary recruitment exercise:
• syntax and semantics
• phonology
• second language acquisition / European linguistics

Applicants whose research crosses multiple areas of linguistics and cognate areas are especially welcomed. The Department is particularly interested in applicants whose research has a strong grounding in linguistic theory and who employ conventional and/or contemporary research methods to address core issues in linguistics.

Applicants should have (i) a PhD degree in a related discipline; (ii) strong commitment to teaching and research; (iii) research expertise that informs theory and practice in the teaching of modern languages (including French, German, or Spanish); and (iv) extensive experience with study programme administration and strong leadership qualities. Research expertise that complements the current strengths of the Department in the areas of linguistics will be an advantage.
The appointee will (a) teach undergraduate and postgraduate linguistics courses; (b) supervise projects and theses of undergraduate, MA, MPhil and PhD students; (c) develop research in his/her areas of expertise; and (d) undertake administrative duties. He/She will bridge the Linguistics and Modern Languages units of the Department, and be extensively involved in the administration of the Modern Languages unit.

Appointment will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years initially commencing August 2015, which, subject to mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment or substantiation later.

Applications will be accepted until the post is filled.

Monthly Salary and Fringe Benefits
Salary will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The University offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package, including medical care, plus a contract-end gratuity for an appointment of two years or longer and housing benefits for eligible appointees.

The terms mentioned herein are for reference only and are subject to revision by the University.
