The Department of German and Slavic Studies at the University of Manitoba is advertising the position of a 4-month super sessional instructor in German Studies for the Winter semester 2015 (Start Date: 6 January 2015; End Date: 27 April 2015). The position is subject to final budgetary approval.
The successful candidate will teach the following three courses (9 credit hours):
• GRMN 1120: Beginning German (second half of course), 3 credit hours (M, W, F 9:30-10:20)
• GRMN 2120: Introduction to German Culture 1, 3 credit hours (M, W, F 10:30-11:20): Class is conducted in English, no prerequisites, fulfills English writing requirement. Introduces to the culture of contemporary Germany; analyzes literature and other cultural forms since the end of World War I, including the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the Holocaust, divided Germany, Re-Unification, and the European Union.
• GRMN 2140: Exploring German Literature, 3 credit hours (M, W, F 14:30-15:20): Class is conducted in German: Introduction to German Literature by discussing different literary genres; texts by Kafka, Mann, Brecht, Böll, Grass, etc. The class will extend the students’ German vocabulary, oral and written expression and comprehension. Prerequisite: Intermediate German.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in German Studies or near completion and a native or near-native command of English and German, as well as successful teaching experience at the university level and a high level of expertise in the subject areas.
The salary will be approx. $20,000. Note the vacancy announcement lists the salary by course; it will be eventually bundled to the super-sessional position.
There might be an opportunity for the successful applicant to also teach up to nine credit hours in the May / June 2015 summer session (salary is approx. $4800 per three credit hours). Courses in the summer session depend on sufficient student enrollment. Applications will be due in January / February 2015. Currently the Department is planning to offer GRMN 1120 “Beginning German” (6 credit hours) in May/June 2015 and GRMN 2510: “German Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm to Hollywood” (3 credit hours), conducted in English, in May 2015.
