TitelMLA Panel 2015: "The Long (or Short) 20th Century"
BeschreibungAbstracts are welcomed for a panel at the 2015 MLA Convention sponsored by the Division on 20th-Century Comparative Studies

MLA-style calendar dates (in this case, 1900-2000) as markers of emergence or deliquescence of cultural or literary formations are obviously artificial, especially when the use of alternate periodization systems (e.g., Spanish generational, modern Japanese by emperor name, etc.) is taken into consideration. Yet such dating is also apt to take on significant cultural symbolic value (e.g., fin de siecle, Y2K, millennialism). Alternatives such as the “long ____th century” have provoked fruitful discussions and revisions in political, economic, and cultural history. This panel addresses the questions: what would be the gain (for which cultural or language formations) of either demarcating a “long 20th-century” in literary/cultural studies; or, alternatively, of considering a year in the middle of the century (e.g., 1945) as a more significant transitional marker than 1900 or 2000? How does the literary history or formation of movements (e.g., Modernism) of different world regions look when viewed through such a lens? Are there “natural” breaks in the literary history of the last ca. 150 years, and if so, how do they compare with each other in different regions of the world? Abstract of 250 words and CV to Thomas Beebee ( by 15 March.
