PhD Scholarships in Modern Languages
University of St Andrews -School of Modern Languages

The School of Modern Languages at the University of St Andrews invites applications for the following doctoral scholarships:
• Three ‘7th Century’ University of St Andrews PhD Scholarships (open to both Home/EU and Overseas students) each worth £10,000 per year plus Home/EU or Overseas fees for a period of three years.
• Two Santander Universities Doctoral Scholarships each worth £5,000 per year for three years (residence eligibility criteria: the funds are to be awarded to applicants resident in a country within the Santander Universities network, which are: Europe: Belgium, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom; Latin America: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Uruguay; Rest of the World: China, Ghana, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, United States).
The School will consider applications for these awards in any of the languages available in the School and the scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis of academic merit and overall strength of the application.
• FJ Woodward Prize for a first-year PhD in Spanish (both Home/EU and Overseas students; deadline 1st June 2014) worth £8,500 as a single award or to be divided between more than one PhD candidates in Spanish beginning in 2014/15. The prize will be awarded on academic merit and financial need.
• PhD Scholarship in Nineteenth-Century Mexican Culture/History (open to both Home/EU and Overseas students) to fund a doctoral project on an aspect of nineteenth-century Mexican politics and/or culture with particular reference to the early national period between 1821 and 1855, to be supervised by Professor Will Fowler.

To be considered for the above Scholarships, candidates must have been accepted for a doctoral degree in the School of Modern Languages before applying. Please consult the University’s Admissions webpage for information on how to apply for a PhD. Prior to completing your application you are encouraged to consult our staff profiles in order to identify a potential supervisor for your area of interest.
