Extension and Enclosure: Spatial Structures of Imagined Worlds

Two polar responses to space are representative of aesthetic experience in the Goethezeit: limitless extension characterizes the sublime, the perception of a spatial magnitude so great that it thwarts sensory and imaginative comprehension; and delimited enclosure frames the autonomy and free play of the beautiful. These two types of space appear as motifs throughout Goethe’s oeuvre and are also structurally determinative for their narratives, aesthetic effects, and rhetorical elements. Examples include the immense chaos of Strasbourg Cathedral from "Von Deutscher Baukunst," on the one hand; and, on the other, the locked pantry that tantalizes Wilhelm Meister to imagine its hidden contents.

Submissions are invited that reflect on extended and enclosed spaces in Goethe's works and the Goethezeit. Possible topics include:
- spatial structures of narrative, the imagination, and desire
- phenomenologies of space
- rhetorical elements that aim to simulate space in language (such as the use of parataxis, aposiopesis, or asyndeton to produce or capture a sense of the sublime; or the use of topoi as containers for memory and invention)
- the translation of the aesthetic experience of space into other discourses; for example, the natural sublime in Goethe’s science, or enclosed and extended structures of the self in psychology
- mediations and syntheses between the structures of extension and enclosure such as in systemic part-whole structures
- institutional spaces of art: enclosure and extension in museums, concert halls, libraries, domestic settings, etc.

If interested, please send an abstract by March 20 to Elizabeth Powers ( and Anthony Mahler (
