TitelMLA-Session: Universal and Particular in Lessing
BeschreibungThe MLA Division on 18th and early 19th century German Literature and the Lessing Society invite proposals for the 2015 MLA in Vancouver, Jan 8-11:

Universal and Particular in Lessing

In fables, plays, and theological and dramaturgical treatises, Lessing interrogates the complicated status of, and relationship between, particulars and universals. Both Enlightenment histories, such as J.G. Herder’s Ideen zur Philosophie der Geschichte der Menschheit, and the idealist philosophies of G.W.F. Hegel and Schelling posited universalizing narratives. Papers might explore Lessing's historical work against the background of these broad projects, considering, for example, ontogeny and phylogeny in Die Erziehung des Menschengeschlechts. The 18th century also saw the rise of the encyclopedia and other lexica that aimed to organize the particulars of human knowledge, and of aesthetic theories that endeavored to establish universal rules for literary genres, such as J.C. Gottsched’s Versuch einer Critischen Dichtkunst. Papers might explore how Lessing’s Hamburgische Dramaturgie or Laokoon relates to these concurrent theories. Finally, in light of concerns raised by post-colonial studies, do Enlightenment discourses regarding the concept of universal tolerance amongst peoples participate in the negation of cultural differences? Does Lessing participate in the erasure of specific (religious) identities – in Nathan der Weise or other texts – in the name of a universal concept of humanity? We welcome papers on all aspects of universality and particularity in the works of G.E. Lessing.
