A Panel Sponsored by the Music and Sound Studies Network
German Studies Association, Kansas City Missouri, September 18-21, 2014
From the first published references to jazz following World War I to the development of free jazz in the 60s, jazz music was a mainstay of German and Austrian cultural discourse during the 20th century. At the same time, its position was never a stable one and was repeatedly subject to vast changes in the social and political landscapes of both Europe and America. This panel is interested in exploring, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the roles jazz music has played for German and Austrian culture, including, but not limited to questions of popular versus high culture, transatlantic diplomatic relations, racial and cultural identity, transnationalism, and diaspora studies. As a panel sponsored by the Music and Sound Studies Network, we therefore invite proposals by interested scholars for papers considering the impact, dissemination, as well as the aesthetic, cultural, historical, and theoretical significance of jazz to 20th century Germany and Austria. For this interdisciplinary panel, we welcome contributions from both established scholars and graduate students working in musicology, history, literature, film, art history, as well as other fields.
Please send abstracts (in English or German) of no more 400 words to Jonathan Wipplinger (jowippli [at] ncsu.edu) by February 10. Please be aware that should your proposal be accepted, you must be a member of the GSA at the time of the panel’s submission.
