Between War and Wirtschaftswunder: Early Postwar Responses to Destruction in Literature, Music, and Art
At the conclusion of the Second World War, with many German cities destroyed by Allied bombing, millions of dead victims to Nazi persecution, and a continent uprooted by war and genocide, German artists, musicians, and writers struggled to find new modes of coherence amidst a fractured moral and physical landscape. Although Germans have often been accused of silence in the immediate aftermath of the war, of the “inability to mourn” (Mitscherlichs) and of a “lack of response” (Arendt), more recent scholarship seeks to amend this model and look to what was being voiced.
This panel seeks to address representations of, and responses to, catastrophe across the arts in the immediate postwar years. Papers will examine Trümmerkünste from interdisciplinary perspectives, drawing particular attention to artistic disciplines where the “art of ruin” is less well documented. What kinds of responses do we find in the years after 1945, and how did art function in the immediate aftermath of catastrophe? What kinds of artistic forms were suited to this period? How did “ordinary” people use aesthetic forms to work through the recent past? And how did cultural production participate in the broader reconstruction of world orders that took place in postwar Germany following total defeat?
We welcome papers that address these issues across artistic disciplines. Please send an abstract in either English or German (approximately 350 words), a brief bio, and a specific request of AV needs (if applicable) by Sunday, February 9, to Abby Anderton (firstname.lastname@example.org). Please note that presenters must be members of the German Studies Association (see www.thegsa.org for information on membership), and that no one individual may give more than one paper or participate in more than two public roles at the conference. If you are invited to participate you will need to provide your GSA member number.
