for Doctoral Study at the IMLR
Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates who wish to focus their research on German-speaking exile, preferably in the UK. Topics may include literature, politics, history, sociology, migration, or the arts. (The previous bursary holder's topic of research dealt with the dynamics of forced female migration from Czechoslovakia to Britain, 1938-50.) A working knowledge of German would be advantageous.
The award, which is funded by the Martin Miller and Hannah Norbert-Miller Trust, provides the successful applicant with a fee waiver equivalent to up to 100% of the full-time or part-time Home/EU tuition fee, and is tenable for three years (full-time) or five years (part-time), beginning in October 2014, plus maintenance of £15,000 (full-time) or £7,500 (part-time. The successful candidate, who will be expected to register at the Institute of Modern Languages Research (University of London School of Advanced Study) for the MPhil/PhD degree of the University of London, will be able to draw on the expertise of the Institute's Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies.
