From Abortion to Contraception: Family Planning and Unwanted Pregnancy in German Writing and Culture
While the history and representation of abortion has been fairly well researched (for example "Cultures of Abortion in Weimar Germany" by Cornelie Usborne, the article, “The Abortion debate in Unified Germany” by Elizabeth Clements, "Infanticide, Illegitimacy, and Abortion in Modern German Literature" by Leslie Shouse-Luxem, "Shaping Abortion Discourse: Democracy and the Public Sphere in Germany and the United States" edited by Myra Marx Ferre et al.), there seems to be considerably less on other issues of unwanted pregnancy as well as family planning overall. This session seeks to explore the discourses of birth control in 20th-century and recent German-language fiction and film.
