TitelGSA Panel: The Poetics of Space in the Goethezeit
BeschreibungGoethe Society of North America Panel at GSA Convention

In the final lines of the “Vorspiel auf dem Theater” in Faust I, the Director issues a paradoxical injunction to stride through the entire circle of creation from within an “engen Bretterhaus,” and to wander from heaven through the world to hell “mit bedächt’ger Schnelle.” These famous lines vividly invoke and imbricate a number of dualities that have assumed a central role in the current “spatial turn” in the humanities and social sciences: the local and the global, the natural world and the manufactured world, the spatial and the temporal, the static and the mobile. Building on the momentum of recent scholarship that illuminates the origins of the geographic imagination (Chenxi Tang), the evolution of architectural metaphors in German thought (Daniel Purdy), and the ecological significance of place in this era (Kate Rigby), this panel asks: To what extent do authors and texts of the period reflect an awareness of changing concepts of space? To what extent can one speak of a broad spatial turn occurring in German letters around 1800? In what ways might twentieth and twenty-first century theories of space (e.g., Michel Foucault, Michel de Certeau, Derek Gregory, Edward Casey, Edward Soja) shed light on texts by Goethe and his contemporaries, and in what ways might these in turn enrich more recent engagements with spatial concerns? We welcome proposals that explore the poetics of space in the Goethezeit from multiple theoretical perspectives, from analyses of literary renderings of particular spaces and spatial practices, to reflections on the rise of the concept of the global, to considerations of shifts in the understanding of the ecological and cosmological order.
