BeschreibungThe Poetics of Desire in Goethe’s Writing

For the next annual meeting of the GSA (Kansas City, September 18-21, 2014), papers are invited that address the poetics of desire in the works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. "The Poetry of Desire" in Nicholas Boyle’s Goethe biography points to the predominant trope of Eros in Goethe's early work, whereby the zealous libidinal flames that abound in the Sturm und Drang productions thematically reappear via thematic repetitions and transformations in his later "classical" masterpieces. Conceptions of desire – understandable in German as Begierde, Lust, Zuneigung, Sehnsucht, Wunsch, Verlangen, Begehren, Liebe – might address constellations of figures on a purely narrative level; that is, how do figures desire – or not desire – one another in Goethe's texts? Inquiries into Goethe's depictions of sexuality, such as figures' emotional desire for love, physical intimacy, hetero and same-sex attractions, as in the Wahlverwandtschaften; materialism, with respect to a desire for objects, wealth, and intellectual curiosity in texts like Faust; the desire to be part of a group or a member of a society, with reference to Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre; as well as overt desires for Otherness, thinking of the West-östlicher Divan. How does Goethe's poetic of desire relate to social norms or stand out as revolutionary divergences therefrom particularly in terms of intertextual analysis? It might also be of interest for us to consider how Goethe's poetics explicitly or implicitly relate to philosophical discourses about desire in Goethe’s age.
Papers that address the role of desire in relation to poetry, philosophy, economics, gender, transnationalism, or in connection with additional topics, are encouraged. Please send your abstracts of no more than 250 words and not later then January 30, 2014 to Hamid Tafazoli (tafazoli.hamid@gmail.com).
