BeschreibungCFP: Publications of the English Goethe Society

The editors of the Publications of the English Goethe Society – Angus Nicholls (Queen Mary, University of London) and W. Daniel Wilson (Royal Holloway, University of London) – are accepting submissions for the open-submission issue of PEGS. Articles should be sent to D.Wilson@rhul.ac.uk by 15 Dec. 2013. The submission requirements are available at http://www.englishgoethesociety.org/PEGSSubmissions.html. Articles may be in English or German. Though we have no set parameters on length, articles are generally in the range of 5,000-10,000 words. Publication is expected in May or June, 2014.

The English Goethe Society was founded in 1886, making it the oldest learned society in the UK dedicated to things German, and the second-oldest Goethe society in the world. In expanding the publication schedule of PEGS to three issues a year, the Society has opened the journal to high-quality unsolicited articles, which are evaluated by blind peer review. Members of the international Editorial Board are listed at http://www.englishgoethesociety.org/PEGSeditors.html The subject areas covered by PEGS are:

o Goethe’s life and works and their immediate context

o the literature and culture of 18th- and early 19th-century German-speaking lands

o responses to or reception of that literature and culture both outside and within Germany up to the present day.

The English Goethe Society has in its gift three prizes. The deadline for the one this year is 30 November 2013:

GOETHE PRIZE OF THE

ENGLISH GOETHE SOCIETY

The English Goethe Society awards one yearly prize for the best undergraduate or post-graduate essay on Goethe’s life and works. The prize is in the amount of £100. Articles that meet the standards of original research will be considered for publication in PEGS. Essays should be no longer than 5,000 words in length and neither published nor under consideration for publication. The deadline this year has been extended to 30 November 2013.

THOMAS MANN PRIZE OF THE

ENGLISH GOETHE SOCIETY

The Thomas Mann Prize, in the amount of £100, is funded by the Ida Herz Bequest (Ida Herz was for many years Mann’s devoted secretary), and is awarded for an essay that addresses an aspect of Thomas Mann’s life and work. It is awarded in even-numbered years, alternating with an endowed lecture; at the discretion of the Council, the essay may be published in PEGS. Essays should be neither published nor under consideration for publication. The closing date is 1 October in even years, so the next deadline is 1 October 2014.

PEGS PRIZE OF THE

ENGLISH GOETHE SOCIETY

The English Goethe Society awards one yearly prize for the best article published in PEGS the previous year. The selection process will be conducted by the editors and expert members of the Editorial Board. The prize is in the amount of £100. The winner will be announced at the first Council Meeting of the English Goethe Society each year.

For information about membership in the English Goethe Society, please contact Dr Ernest Schonfield, Ernest.Schonfield@glasgow.ac.uk. The membership rate, for a calendar year, is currently £18 and includes a subscription to PEGS (3 issues a year). Student rates are £9; outside the UK, rates are $50 for North America (but a reduced rate of $40 is available to members of the Goethe Society of North America) and £27 for the rest of the world.
