BeschreibungCITIES OF TRANSLATION (08.05.-09.05.2014), Trinity College Dublin

The urban lifestyle is a relatively recent phenomenon. Cities generate a recognizable national identity and have effectively become the cauldrons of contemporary culture and thought. They are man-made palimpsests that turn the act of reading the city into an excavation of notes left by previous generations. Cities often have a strange relationship with their nations at large, built on a symbiotic need and, at times, reciprocal contempt. There is a shared urban idiom, a system of symbols that crosses nations and their languages. This conference will analyse three cities in comparison – Dublin, Berlin, and New York – as places of translation, to be understood in the wider sense of moving between languages, cultures, social classes, ethnic groups, topographies, and literatures.

Given the highly interdisciplinary scope of the conference, we will solicit contributions from a diverse range of research areas, such as translation theory, cultural theory, literature, sociology, urban theory, and the visual and performative arts. Possible sessions at the conference may include but are not limited to:
− The City as Protagonist in Key Literary Texts
− Mapping the Heterogeneity of the Literary Landscape
− The role of the flậneur
− Stories of immigration and emigration
− Issues of sustainability
− Space theories
− The Role of the River and Docklands through Cycles of Settlement and Commerce/Neglect and Decay/Urban Regeneration
− The elevation of marginal culture into the ranks of mainstream, central culture as seen in neighborhoods such as Prenzlauer Berg and the East Village

Abstracts of approximately 300 words should be submitted by email to Prof. Dr. Peter Arnds (arndsp@tcd.ie) no later than January 15, 2014.
