Roundtable
NeMLA 2014 Convention, Harrisburg, PA, April 3-6 2014

Deadline: September 30, 2013

Many instructors have experienced at least one of the following scenarios:
students register for a literature course simply to fulfill a requirement,
non-majors are unfamiliar with the content and
strategies of the literature classroom, students do not read the material
or participate in discussions.

Rather than concentrate on reasons that lead to these situations, this
roundtable seeks concrete
solutions and focuses on best practices to stimulate interest and
participation. We invite proposals from instructors of literature from all
eras, topics, genres and languages.

We are looking for practical examples that may address:

• Texts that have proven successful with diverse groups of students.
• Methods and activities that engage all students.
• Student-centered learning environments.
• Assessment strategies that encourage investment in the course.
• Technology that facilitates greater participation.
• Applications to students’ interdisciplinary interests and majors.
• Connections to real-life experiences, allowing students to see
literature’s relevance outside of
the classroom.

Reading time will be 10 minutes per speaker, followed by a roundtable
discussion. Please send 200-300 word abstracts and bios to both organizers:
Nicole White, nicole.2.white@uconn.edu and Julie Shoults,
julie.shoults@uconn.edu.
