Freud sees humor as self-defense, Bakhtin as subversion, and Adorno as submission. However, the “dupes” of the status quo whom they would defend, ennoble, or enlighten probably have a more complex if also pre-analytical appreciation of humor’s manifold possibilities. This special session will concern itself with theories and narratives of humor prior to the rise of power- and ideology-critique as a model for theoretical inquiry. Panelists will look at humor and its partners – wit, laughter, the comic, the ridiculous, parody, satire, etc. – in order to discuss how this semantic cluster flourishes in nineteenth-century German-language thought and literature.
Special consideration will be given to how humor’s core features – brevity, nimbleness, suddenness, inversion, brevity, etc. – produce effects that cannot be explained with single-faceted theories such as the ones Freud, Bakhtin, and Adorno propose. Philosophical writers such as Tieck, Jean Paul, Kleist, Heine, and Keller develop panoplies of mirth that combine and multiply the impulses of affirmation and subversion and which take hybrid forms like critical affirmation, diplomatic subversion, nostalgic renunciation, bitter acceptance, friendly contempt, and so on.
A further consideration will be the body’s role in the production and reception of humor. As one of language’s pre-linguistic, necessary conditions, the body is always underdetermined in any interpretive system. Yet more than any other narrative form, more than tragedy even, narratives of humor owe their complexity to the body’ direct involvement. Not only does the humorist rely on the body to embody so many expressions of Geist, but his dearest prize comes from within his audiences’ bodies in the form of laughter, whose eruption precedes explanation. With its origins in tickling, laughter vouchsafes the body’s indispensable role in producing and vetting humor.
Through engaging with nineteenth century German-language thought and literature, this panel will pursue a complex understanding of humor and the surrounding semantic cluster. Possible topics include but are not limited to:
• Genres of humor and wit: Satire, parody, allegory
• The comic body
• The politics of humor, wit, and laughter
• Theories of distinction between concepts in the semantic cluster: humor, wit, laughter, jokes
• Jokes as fragments
• Jokes as micro-narratives
• Jokes as weapons
• Comic prose
• Comic drama
