Fifty Shades of Brecht

Bertolt Brecht’s (mis-)treatment of his female collaborators is well-known, but this panel considers why these women sacrificed so much to work with Brecht and what benefit they derived from this collaboration. “Collaboration” should be understood in broadest sense possible. This panel (sponsored by Women in German) seeks submissions from a wide range of topics related to Brecht and his female collaborators, including but not limited to:

--Brecht’s female collaborators (Weigel, Berlau, Hauptmann, Steffin, actresses or directors at the Berliner Ensemble, or other working relationships not widely documented, etc.)
--Influences in Brecht’s life and/or Brecht’s work, both personal (marriage, family, friends) and professional (including productive and/or antagonistic relationships)
--Engaging with other recent scholarly works about Brecht and his female collaborators (John Fuegi, Sabine Kebir, Grischa Meyer, etc.)
--Representations of women and/or female characters in his works (drama, poetry, prose, etc.)
