|Beschreibung||CFP: Revisiting the Moon (GSA, Denver, October 3-6, 2013)
The moon has long served in German literature and visual
productions as a symbol for romantic longing, as a trope of madness, as contributing
to depictions of the sublime, as the (female) counterpart of the (male) sun,
and as lending familiar landscapes a sense of romance or eerie otherworldliness.
This classic metaphor warrants reexamination in light of new paradigms, including
the spatial turn, developments in queer and gender theory, ecocriticism, and
minority literatures. For this panel, we invite papers that critically examine
literary and/or visual depictions of the moon both within and outside these
paradigms. Papers may examine, but are not limited to, the following questions:
How do productions prior to the first scientific
images of the moon imagine its topography and other physical characteristics?
How does the surface of the moon serve as a site
of adventure, danger, invention, or even romance?
In what ways is the moon perceived to influence
bodies, for example through disease or menstruation?
How have feminist readings of the moon in German
texts, films, or performances resulted in new metaphors regarding gender and
What functions might the moon serve in
literature or film during the Cold War and space race?
How have minority cultures in Germany written
What functions might the moon have in literature
and/or film as we become increasingly aware of the environmental problems on
