BeschreibungViolence and the Family
The German Studies Association (GSA) Thirty-Seventh Annual Conference Denver, Colorado, October 3-6, 2013

Violence has been a continuous disruptive force of the family unit in German literature and film—whether that violence originates from within the family or enters the family from without. Physical and psychological acts of violence caused by war, sexual abuse, feuds between family members, or state-controlled brutality become narrative catalysts that may separate family members physically and emotionally or bring them closer together in new interpersonal constellations. The representation of violent acts also allows authors to uncover underlying conflicts between narrative characters when these are forced to react to the upheaval of their familiar relationships.
We are seeking contributions for a panel (or a series of panels) that look at the representation of violence within the family or the disruption of families through external violence in German literature and film from the Middle Ages through the Present. Topics may include but are not limited to:
- sexual abuse/rape of and by family members
- the disruption of family ties through war
- sibling rivalry and family feuds
- medical intervention and the violation of the body
- resistance to parental control
- mistreatment of children or seniors within the family unit
- state-controlled terror and surveillance of families
- family autobiographies; autobiographical fiction; interviews; open letters
Please send one-page abstracts to Nick Ostrau ( and Anja Wieden ( by February 1, 2013.
