BeschreibungTranscultural Narratives: German Television Format Adaptations (Panel at 2013 German Studies Association, Colorado, United States)

Many of Germany's most popular fictional drama and comedy television series began as adaptations of formats derived from models developed for other national television markets. Recent series such as "Verliebt in Berlin" or "Stromberg", or even long-running series like "Lindenstraße" or "Gute Zeiten, Schlechte Zeiten", have all undergone an adaptation from their original British, US, Dutch, Australian, or even Colombian versions to create “cultural proximity” for German audiences. Culturally specific references of the original series were changed to avoid so-called “cultural discount” and to achieve a higher degree of identification.

The papers of this panel at the 2013 German Studies Association conference in Denver CO (Oct 3-6) will investigate different localization strategies of telenovelas and sitcoms seen as contested constructs of national and cultural identities. Topics that could be addressed in contributions may include, but are not limited to: cultural references and plot developments, film and televisual aesthetic techniques, casting and character development, the use of physical and geographic space, historical contextualization, etc. The presentations may be framed by discussions of globalization within the dialectics of homogenization and heterogenization, power relations and hegemony. They may also be based on concepts of identity that include not only socio-spatial or territorial elements, but also socio-communicational aspects and would therefore be considered “transterritorial” and “multilinguistic” (Canclini 2004). The panel organizers are especially interested in papers that apply critical notions of interculturality as well as theories of intercultural communication as analytical tools and approaches.
