BeschreibungCall for Papers for Proposed Panel

Society for Cinema and Media Studies conference - March 6-10, 2013 - Chicago, IL

Panel Subject: Critical Perspectives on Werner Herzog’s Documentaries

This panel explores the documentary practice of Werner Herzog.
Conscious of how the existing criticism has dealt with Herzog’s work, this panel seeks to expand the scholarship on his documentaries in particular, including for example "Fata Morgana" (1970), "The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner" (1973), "Lessons of Darkness" (1992) and "Grizzly Man" (2005), and his most recent contributions "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" (2010) and "Into the Abyss" (2011). Critics and scholars tend to focus on Herzog’s notion of “ecstatic truth,” on his penchant for staging and fabrication, and therefore locate him outside of the documentary tradition. This panel seeks papers that either complicate existing understandings of Herzog’s documentaries or develop new critical approaches to his work.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to issues of:
