Mary Immaculate College is an autonomous university-level College of Education and the Liberal Arts academically linked with the University of Limerick. It serves the needs of a growing and diverse student population of over 3,200 students. Undergraduate programmes for B.Ed. and B.A. degrees and a range of post-graduate programmes at Diploma, Masters and Doctoral levels are offered in the College. This is a fulltime, permanent appointment commencing 27th August 2012.

The Department of German Studies, Faculty of Arts is seeking to recruit An Assistant Lecturer/Lecturer in German Studies. The successful candidate will have a PhD in German Studies (or equivalent) and fluency in German and English. He/she must have a strong research, publication and teaching record in the field of 20th and 21st Century German Studies and/or Applied Linguistics as well as a clear research and publication plan for the coming years. He/she must demonstrate a commitment to high-quality teaching at undergraduate level and to teaching and/or supervision at postgraduate level. Research and teaching interests and expertise in the area of second language acquisition (SLA) and teaching methodology, experience in teaching German language ab initio, expertise in the field of translation studies, use of the latest e-learning technologies, and experience in postgraduate teaching/supervision will all be assets. The successful candidate will also undertake administrative and academic supervisory duties, as directed by the Head of Department. Candidates must have:
1. A PhD in German Studies (or equivalent);
2. Fluency in both German and English (written and oral);
3. Experience in third-level teaching at undergraduate level in the field of 20th and 21st Century German Studies and/or Applied Linguistics, and a strong interest in teaching and supervision at postgraduate level;
4. A strong research and publication record and a clearly articulated research and publication plan for the next three years;
5. Excellent interpersonal, organisational and communication skills.
Candidates must clearly indicate in their application how they meet each of these pre-requisites.

Additionally, it would be advantageous to candidates to have:
• Expertise in second language acquisition;
• Experience in teaching German language ab initio;
• Expertise in Swiss/Austrian Studies;
• Expertise in the field of translation studies;
• Expertise in the use of the latest e-learning technologies;
• Experience in academic administration.

Salary Scale: The appointments will be made on the Assistant Lecturer or Lecturer Scale at a point in line with current Government Pay Policy.
