BeschreibungLiterature & Photography: A Symposium

This symposium will be held at the Leeds Humanities Research Institute (LHRI), University of Leeds, on Saturday 10 November 2007.

The interface between literature and photography has become a so-called “hot” topic in recent years. Just some of its aspects to be considered in this symposium include:

- evocations of photographs in fiction and poetry
- photographic 'illustrations' to literary works
- the incorporation of actual photographs in social commentaries and travelogues
- how to read full-blown combinations of words and images as photo-texts
- the social impact of photo-texts
- photographic portraiture and literary celebrity
- the status of words in photographic anthologies

Writers and photographers to be treated include Penelope Lively, Henry Mayhew, Susan Sontag, Weegee, Fay Godwin, Jack Kerouac, Ted Hughes, Mary Ellen Mark, Anne Carson, Regis Debray, Paul Strand, and Leslie Marmon Silko.

The LHRI symposium will offer fully illustrated and cutting edge presentations by writers and scholars from a range of disciplines and departments. A full programme may be seen here:

Fee (set at cost, to include buffet lunch and beverages): students and unwaged = £8; waged = £12. There is limited seating; places will be allocated in order of registration. You should register in advance. A registration form may be downloaded here:
