"Affective Spaces. Theorizing Space and Emotion in Literature"

Be it the decaying castles in Edgar Allan Poe, the bizarre architectures in Franz Kafka or the claustrophobic interiors in Samuel Beckett: the feelings and emotions of literary figures are frequently represented through spatial configurations. Despite an increasing body of research (mostly case studies) exploring the relation between spatial depictions and emotion (cf. Gertrud Lehnert), we still lack a profound theoretical and methodological foundation to analyze the range of different possibilities that literary texts possess to convey emotions through spatial tropes.

This seminar seeks to fill this theoretical and methodological gap. Combining dynamic concepts of space (cf. Liz Bondy) with recent approaches to literary emotions (cf. Simone Winko), we seek to elaborate new instruments to theorize the notion of affective spaces in literature.

The seminar will consist of four sessions (three panels plus closing discussion): The first panel, “Theorizing Affective Spaces,” seeks to elaborate on possible theoretical foundations and to develop analytical tools in order to designate textual means of interrelating space and emotion. The second and third panel will provide complementary approaches to the subject by focusing on a) spatial and b) emotional representations. In the second panel “Literary Interiors,” we will analyze the representation of interior spaces and the diverse functions they can assume in order to convey certain feelings. In the third panel “Spaces of Anxiety,” we will focus on one distinct emotion and investigate how it can be spatialized in different ways. Especially in modern times when anxiety is regarded as an almost omnipresent while at the same time diffuse feeling, the category of space often becomes crucial to the indirect expression of this existential emotion. Thus, the feeling of anxiety will serve as a powerful showcase for more general considerations regarding possible ways of interrelating emotion and space.

In a closing discussion the results of the three panels will be assembled and reviewed.

This workshop has been accepted in the final program of the Congress and is open to individual proposals. These should be submitted before 1st June 2012 via the online system of the Congress (
