BeschreibungINSTITUTE OF GERMANIC & ROMANCE STUDIES
University of London School of Advanced Study

The Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies offers opportunities for visiting scholars, both unfunded and funded, to conduct research into any area of Germanic or Romance Studies at the Institute. Up to ten Visiting Fellowships and five Visiting Scholarships are available annually on a non-stipendiary basis, held at the Institute or within one of its four research centres: Centre for the Study of Cultural Memory, Centre for the Study of Contemporary Women's Writing, The Ingeborg Bachmann Centre for Austrian Literature, The Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies .

The Fellowships and Scholarships are tenable for any period from one month to a year between 1 September 2012 and 30 June 2013. Extensions to the original period of the Fellowship may be possible, but will be subject to the same terms. Fellows in receipt of external funding are asked to pay a bench fee of £100 per month.

The Institute can offer shared office accommodation with WiFi, internet/email, photocopying facilities and access to the Institute's Germanic Studies Library, the Senate House Library, and libraries of other Institutes within the School of Advanced Study (e.g. the Institutes of Advanced Legal Studies, Classical Studies, Commonwealth Studies, Historical Research, the Americas, and the Warburg Institute). Admission to the British Library can be arranged as appropriate. Fellows/Scholars are offered free access to all Institute events, and are encouraged to participate actively in these. They are expected to present a short written report on the progress their research has made at the conclusion of their visit and, where their stay in London permits, to give a seminar at one of the Institute's seminar series. Fellows are also invited to contribute a recent, normally unpublished, piece of work to our e-repository, SAS-Space. Publications resulting from research carried out during the period of the Fellowship/Scholarship must carry due acknowledgement of the Institute and, where appropriate, a copy should be presented to the Germanic Studies Library.

Applicants should submit the application form by the closing date stated together with:
* a curriculum vitae and publications list not more than 2pp in length,
* a statement of the research project to be carried out during the period of the Fellowship/Scholarship not exceeding 1,500 words in length, and
* arrange for two academic references specific to the Fellowship/Scholarship to be sent by the closing date to Jane Lewin at the Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies, University of London, Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU (or, by email to jane.lewin@sas.ac.uk).
The preferred method of submission is by email; please ensure that the subject line reads 'IGRS Visiting Fellowship Application 2012-2013'.

All applicants are notified of the result of the competition following consideration by the relevant committee at the IGRS. Applicants are not called for interview.

The closing date for receipt of applications and references is 31 March 2012.
