The Song Scholarship and Performance (SSP) program at VISI is a collaborative seminar comprising singers, pianists and an interdisciplinary array of academics working together in an environment that dissolves the boundaries between scholarship and performance.
In this program, music historians, music theorists, and scholars of German poetry and culture will have the opportunity to work intimately with singers and pianists, and vice versa. We will share our ideas through lectures, master classes, seminar workshops, coachings, and personalized mentoring sessions, all the while making valuable professional connections. Student scholars and performers will also put their ideas into practice by collaborating with each other in a lecture-recital and a final concert performance.
The thematic focus of SSP 2012 is on the songs of Johannes Brahms and Hugo Wolf. Poems to be discussed will therefore include the work of a range of 19th-century figures, such as Goethe, Heine, Eichendorff, and Mörike, as well as lesser-known figures such as Klaus Groth and Georg Friedrich Daumer. In addition, we will explore other repertoire and topics within the art song universe, according to our interests.
SSP is one part of the Vancouver International Song Institute (VISI), a unique summer festival supporting the perpetuation of art song as a vital human legacy. VISI includes dynamic and intensive masterclasses and coachings with internationally-renowned artists, new creative practices of Art Song Theatre, an Art Song Lab for composer/poet/performer collaborations, workshops in diverse Global Song traditions, lectures on topics ranging from poetry analysis to art activism, and the SONGFIRE Festival of Song.
