"Daß die Zeit uns verkennen muß , ist ein Gesetz." (/Kein Ort. Nirgends./)

Laid to rest in the Dorotheenstädter Friedhof among other major figuresof postwar German culture (among them Stephan Hermlin, Hans Mayer, Bertolt Brecht, Anna Seghers), Christa Wolf was long heralded as "die gesamtdeutsche Autorin,"a likely candidate for the Nobel Prize. After 1989 in unified Germany, however, she was often consigned to an identity as "DDR Schriftstellerin, "as can be seen in the limited reception of her final work /Stadt der Engel Oder the Overcoat of Dr. Freud /(2010).

With a short series of panels, we will seek to take cognizance of the loss of one of the most influential writers of postwar Germany, seeking to understand the parameters of this influence and how renewed attention to her importance in the wake of her death may signal the beginnings of a reassessment of her significance in German, indeed European history; in the world of letters; and in the teaching of German and /or Feminist Studies.

Please send submissions in any field of German Studies by January 29 to Patricia Herminghouse (pahe[at] rochester.rr.com.
